THE INNOVATIVE WAYS in which democratic South Africa has, since 1994, addressed the mining industry's specific domestic socioeconomic issues, the attraction of investment, and global concern with sustainability are surely of great interest not only to stakeholders there but also to the African mining sector as a whole. In 2004, for the second time, the South African government's Dept of Minerals & Energy held its Mining Week in conjunction with the Electra Mining Africa trade show. The two events certainly put the country's progress so far in the spotlight.
