GOLD HAS CONTINUED to do well despite the rebound in the value of the US dollar on the strength of fears about rising stateside inflation, but this is still a very volatile commodity heavily influenced by the 10 per cent-plus decline in the value of the South African currency since the beginning of the year; a significant hardening of the rand is predicted by the end of 2006 as just too much export competitiveness has been purchased this year at all sorts of social costs at home, whatever the effects in the gold mines.
