Planning for the Elimination of Halon During the 1960s, halon fire suppression equipment became the preferred way to protect areas with expensive and crucial electronic equipment. Then, in 1974, two American scientists linked halon with ozone depletion in the stratosphere. A battle of words and science ensued between environmentalists on the one hand and halon manufacturers and suppliers on the other, and in 1987, nations around the world agreed to a timetable to eliminate halon production.
