Getting real about frame relay.

Frame relay can reduce costs in some networks by as much as 100 percent. But if you're expecting it to be a panacea or a no-brainer, you'll be disappointed. Frame relay was launched with much fanfare in late 1990. Its promoters have praised its "elastic bandwidth," "low pricing" and general suitability for LAN interconnection.

But because of the newness of frame relay service and technology, it has been difficult to examine these claims. In a recent survey, we collected detailed profiles of LAN interconnect applications from 20 users.
