Jostling for a more open APPN. (IBM's Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking Node)

The first release of the much-vaunted APPN Network Node (NN) capability on the IBM 6611 bridge/router, which is due to be available this spring, will not be able to interact with any of IBM's other APPN NN implementations, such as those on the AS/400, PC (with OS/2 NS/2), 3174 or S/36, or with the S/3x0 host version that is scheduled to debut around midyear.

The initial IBM 6611 APPN NN capability will only conduct Network-Node-to-Network-Node interactions across TCP/IP. A 6611 APPN NN can, however, interact with the APPN NN implementation on a 3Com NETBuilder bridge/router, which is due to be available by mid 1993. 3Com is one of the IBM strategic partners that are beta-testing the APPN NN "meta-code," which IBM currently sells under license for $400,000...
