MCI's 800-CALL-INFO should be here to stay. (debate over MCI's worlwide directory service) (Washington Perspective) (Column)

Last month, BCR sounded an alarm over MCI's new 1-800-CALL-INFO worldwide directory service and carried complaints that it violates the traditional toll-free status of 800 service (see "Will 800 Service Remain Toll Free?" November 1994, p. 8.) But nothing in this business is sacred anymore, so why should 800 service be held to a different standard? Besides, MCI is going to win this one anyway.

While I am no particular fan of MCI, I have no trouble agreeing with them that 1-800-CALL-INFO is legal under the Communications Act and the FCC's rules and orders as they now stand. Moreover, if either Congress or the FCC really intended to preserve an absolute toll-free quality for the 800 Service Access Code (SAC), they have had ample opportunity over the past decade...
