Frame relay jumps first hurdles, faces new ones. (includes related article)

Frame relay has come a long way and is becoming accepted by the market. But if you think the challenges are over, think again. It looks like the frame relay market is about to explode. Services are widely available and the equipment - both on customers' premises and in the carrier networks - is maturing.

Rick Malone, a principal at Vertical Systems Group (Dedham, MA), expects frame relay service revenues in 1995 to pass $500 million. But even though frame relay is clearly on the rise, new areas of concern are emerging. Pricing for carrier service has been a moving target, and customers have to negotiate hard to avoid getting locked into bad deals. Another issue is how effective frame relay is for carrying System Network Architecture (SNA) data. ...
