The allure of Internet telephony is simple: It's cheap. Traffic moves across for 3 to 5 cents per minute, compared with the PSTN's 7 to 10 cents (international calls are even higher). But implementing Internet telephony has been kludgy at best, relying on closed-group PC-to-PC links. Now a new crop of gateways and servers is emerging that will make it easier to use the 'Net for links not only between computers but also between telephones and fax machines (see this issue, pp. 43-46).

While the early providers of Internet Telephony were small companies, more formidable established players are moving in. In April, for example, Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ) announced a product aimed at carriers and service providers.
