A few months back, this magazine characterized Internet service provider (ISP) service-level guarantees as "warm, fuzzy and paper-thin" (see December 1998, pp. 23-27). The biggest weakness - the "thinness" - is that most ISPs delineate SLAs according to performance statistics measured across their entire customer base; individual customers have no way of knowing how their service is performing.
Enter Inverse Network Technology (www.inversenet.com), which started measuring Internet performance almost as soon as Internet performance started to matter.
