On the road to voice over IP.(Internet Protocol)

The networking industry has embarked on a journey to a destination which some call "Voice Over IP" (VOIP) and others refer to as "Internet Telephony." The passengers include everyone who uses a telephone, while the drivers are those of us who are now building the infrastructure. But both passengers and drivers have good reason to feel uneasy about this journey: The drivers have an incomplete map and only a fuzzy idea of how to get to the ultimate destination.

Still, the trip seems worth taking, because the destination promises: * Efficient use of bandwidth with compression and packet switching. * Integration of infrastructures and services such as voice, Web, email, fax and video. * Lower costs to both end users and service providers....
