Is HP Telephony's Future On Cable?(Industry Trend or Event)

With the incumbent local exchange carriers' (ILECs') massive installed based of circuit-based Class 5 central office switches, the existing technology would seem to have a firm grip on voice services for the foreseeable future (also see this issue, pp. 56-60). So, as with high-speed Internet access, any challenge to the existing order will have to come from outside the traditional PSTN world. The cable companies were supposed to have mounted a challenge during the 1990s, but, apart from cable modems, nothing materialized. However, things may be changing.

The largest cable multiple system operators (MSOs) already are offering voice service based on Class 5 switches attached to their hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) networks. A brief progress report:
