Despite the economic slowdown, large enterprises are still short-handed when it comes to IT staff. According to its annual survey of 500 large corporations, Meta Group consultancy reports about 600,000 still unfilled IT jobs. The picture has grown somewhat better for employers, Meta Group says, noting that the talent shortfall peaked at nearly 1 million jobs last year.

The good news for IT employees is that their pay is rapidly outstripping their non-IT counterparts, defined as pay for IT workers that's 10-20 percent above non-IT workers, a share that's growing.
