Host-based intrusion prevention systems (IPSs) will grow at a 52.7 percent annual rate through 2007, according to the Yankee Group. Host-based IPSs work with the operating system kemel to stop attacks at the host, rather than network level. "The mission of HIP is clear: prevent damage to network servers and desktops from unknown attacks," said Eric Ogren, senior analyst.

"It is much more economical for the enterprise to invest in ounces of intrusion prevention, than it is to invest in pounds of after-attack cures."
