A couple of weeks ago, while chowing down on an oversized chocolate-vanilla yogurt swirl (nine zillion calories, but not to worry--no fat!), I was catching up on some back issues of The Wall Street Journal, when two related articles caught my eye. One had an arresting headline: "Phone Outages Grow More Severe" (WSJ, Nov 10, p. B10); the other was only slightly less alarming: "Power-Hungry Computers Put Data Centers in Bind" (WSJ, Nov 14, p. A1).

The gist of both articles was that power issues, and I'm talking electrical here, are more problematic for 21st century telecom and computer networking than they were for those built with 20th century gear. The phone outage problem is actually kind of a mixed bag--the number of outages is down, but their duration...
