WASHINGTON -- It's summer in Washington and Congress is overrun with legislators, lobbyists, tourists -- and rabbis. From disputes over the peace process and funding to the Palestine Liberation Organization to arguments over GOP plans to gut affirmative action and programs for the poor, hot-button items on the national agenda are spurring rabbis from all sides of the religious spectrum to flock to the capital and make their voices heard. To be sure, rabbis have long taken political stands on a wide range of issues, from the civil rights movement to the fate of Soviet Jews and, of course, the state of Israel.
