NEW YORK -- What started two years ago as a dialogue between parents and teachers about gender equity at the Solomon Schechter school in Newton, Mass., is now moving beyond the walls of the Conservative Jewish day school and erupting into a battle over the place of women's studies and political correctness in Jewish education. The Newton group, the Gender Equity Subcommittee, began its activities with little fanfare, sponsoring events to celebrate International Women's Month and discussing the possibility of including the names of the matriarchs alongside those of the patriarchs in prayer services.
