Forward 04-06-2001 LETTER FROM CHICAGO: Rabbis Face Superstores in Kosher Deli War Resentment is simmering in some outlying neighborhoods of the Windy City over the local Orthodox rabbinate's attempt to block a major supermarket chain from opening kosher delis and bakeries in a number of its stores. Officials of the Chicago Rabbinical Council said the tactic was necessary to prevent the chain, Jewel Supermarkets, from driving independent kosher retailers out of business.
