Clergy Warned of 'Burnout' After Sept. 11

Newhouse, Alana Forward 06-21-2002 Nine months after September 11, clergy of all faiths may be on course for severe burnout, according to the chairman of disaster spiritual care service at the American Red Cross of Greater New York, Rabbi Stephen Roberts. At a conference held Monday at the Sheraton Hotel in New York, Roberts and others attempted to address this potential problem. Roberts said that the Jewish community in the tri-state area was disproportionately affected by the attack on the World Trade Center.
Many area rabbis lost more than one congregant, and survivors are now being faced with the end of victim assistance benefits. Tending to the needs of so many can leave a rabbi exhausted, Roberts said. "Any board member of any synagogue has to ask,...
