Indian Country Today (Lakota Times) 06-09-1997 Court decision gives Hopi cut from coal taxes: Offset claim by Navajo rejected SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe, opponents in a court battle over coal mining tax revenues, are each claiming victory following a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision. A Hopi claim for taxes received from coal resources by the Navajo Nation has been upheld by the 9th Circuit court. And the result is the Hopi Tribe will receive nearly $7 million from its share of the coal mining taxes collected by the Navajo Nation. The 9th Circuit court ruled that the Hopi Tribe was to share -- on a 50-50 basis -- tax revenues from the coal mining operations of the Peabody Western Coal Co.
