Shaffer, Mark Indian Country Today (Lakota Times) 09-03-2003 FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - No one could ever accuse Northern Arizona University of not having lofty goals. It's right there in big, black, bold letters in the front of the university's strategic plan manual, that NAU is intended to be the "nation's leading university serving Native Americans." And, the statistics certainly suggest giving that ambitious goal a second look. With nearly 1,400 students representing more than 40 tribes, NAU has the largest Indian student enrollment outside of Oklahoma.

It ranks first in the nation in master's degrees awarded to Native American students and total degrees given to Native American women. It also has the largest applied indigenous studies program in the country,...
