Manor, John H. Michigan Chronicle 02-18-2003 Dr. Arthur Johnson was born in Americus, Ga., on Nov. 5, 1925 to Clara Stewart and Arthur Allen. It was during the early years of his childhood that Johnson had his first real brush with racism, which helped set his feet on the path. "I recall driving into Birmingham, Ala., with the White family that my mother did domestic work for," said Johnson.
"They had children that were about my age and I remember feeling special for being included in the trip. It was during that drive that I recall the father of the family telling a `nigger' story and how everyone thought it was so funny.
