Minority coaches: Great battle, wrong fight

Stein, Leland, III Michigan Chronicle 02-18-2003 In the Detroit Lions' battle against the NFL's Diversity Committee, the lines of demarcation are blurred beyond a simple right or wrong retort. I stand strongly behind affirmative action and equal opportunity. So, when civil rights attorneys Johnnie Cochran and Cyrus Mehri challenged the NFL's hiring policy, I applauded. Cochran's and Mehri's legal and moral interjections resulted in a diversity committee for the NFL.
On Dec. 20, the 32 NFL owners "strongly agreed" to include at least one minority candidate in every head coaching selection process. I feel the diversity committee is a necessary and noble cause. With the NFL population numbering over 75 percent Black, one might rightfully assume out of those...
