Keeping scholarship giving in the family

Michigan Chronicle 10-11-2005 On Saturday, Aug. 13, the inaugural George and Preston Walker Scholarships were awarded. The event, held at Seldom Blues in the Renaissance Center, included the recipients, the fund custodian, and for inspiration, Detroit Lions Pro Football Hall of Famer Lem Barney. The scholarships are named for two long-time Detroiters who, while married in the South, raised all five of their daughters in Detroit.
The Walkers were very active in their church, Springhill Missionary Baptist, where Barney has been an associate pastor for 28 years.
