But others suggested that despite the smiles, Sharon is prepared to knuckle under to American pressure to comply with Palestinian demands. Those demands were set forth last week by Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas in his first White House meeting with President George W. Bush: release more Palestinian prisoners -- including members of the terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad -- and stop construction of the proposed 220-mile Israeli security fence.
