Leibovitz, Liel The Jewish Week 10-08-2004 N.Y.-based group picking up fund-raising efforts for a unique Israeli university. The largest university in Israel has no campus. It has no verdant patches of grass for its 38,444 students to rest on in between classes. It has no blackboards, no quad, no cafeteria. The Open University is a distance-learning enterprise used by one of every six Israeli students, according to recent figures released by Dun and Bradstreet Israel.

With courses conducted by correspondence, students need not interrupt their lives to attend. As the university's student body continues to grow exponentially -- it has more than doubled in the last 10 years -- the American Friends of the Open University of Israel is stepping up fund-raising...
