Dr. Nahum Sarna, a biblical scholar who served as editor and translator for the Jewish Publication Society's translation of the Torah, died June 24 at his home in Boca Raton, Fla., after a long illness. He was 82. Dr. Sarna, who had taught at Brandeis University for 20 years and served as chairman of the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, moved to Florida after his retirement in 1985. Inspired by childhood stories his father in London read to him from "Bible Readings with my Children," and ordained by Jews College in London, Dr. Sarna brought a popular touch to his academic research.
