University subversion at Carleton, too.(Exchange)(Letter to the editor)

CD's focus on the "subversion of the university" was fantastically informative and also inspiring. Particularly helpful was David Noble's case study of York University's "private pretensions." At Carleton University, where I study, there is a lack of research that lays out Carleton's similar goals, but the circumstantial evidence is convincing. Recently students have witnessed a sharp increase in attacks on their organizations, space and free speech. Student services have declined rapidly, and our library has been turned into a noisy-but-expensive computer lab. Meanwhile, the athletics wing has expanded massively.
Like the students at York, Carleton students have already fought back. In April and May of 2005, it took an occupation and fourteen arrests to win...
