Firms with $1 million fleets rebuild contract volume and cash flow with used and rented machines America's small construction firms are paying some bills and keeping their noses to the grindstone while the construction industry's budding recovery matures into a more convincing rebound. Single-digit improvements in construction spending over the same months last year have sparked enthusiasm among constructors.

Still financially drained after the recent recession, most firms with fleets valued at $1 million or less will buy used equipment or rent while they cultivate the positive cash flow they need to rebuild their organizations.
