`More intelligent' sensor systems.(IQ-Sense technology from Siemens AG)(Brief Article)

Control Engineering Europe, April, 2001

Siemens' new IQ-Sense technology allows, for the first time, sensors and distributed I/O to communicate with one another via Profibus DP. This makes sensor and diagnostic data available plant-wide. All parameters for IQ-Sense devices can be set from the programmable controller and values can be copied to other modules and sensors, eliminating the time-consuming calibration of each sensor. When a sensor is replaced, even if hot swapping is involved, the PLC automatically restores all settings so that recalibration and teaching of the sensor is unnecessary.

Another innovation of IQ-Sense technology is automatic system diagnosis in the case of faults such as wire break, short-circuit, contamination, or failure of a module or sensor. Both the circuit state and the...
