In the autumn of 2000, ABB charted a course to bring all of its control systems to a hardware and software platform called Industrial-IT. In early February at ABB's annual press conference in Zurich we had a chance to catch up with Dick McAllister, who has worked closely with the Industrial-IT project for the past several years.

What is the biggest challenge for process automation suppliers today?

We're seeing that it's getting harder and harder to be a niche supplier in this market. There are some good niche players out there who are surviving, but wonder for how long. In process automation, it's coming down to four or five major suppliers and soon, it may even be fewer than that.
