LIKE WOMEN THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, we were scratching our heads for months after the election. (Some of us were hiding under the sofa, clutching our copies of the Toronto Star and contemplating emigration to parts north until well after the holidays.) The election results were shattering--a president who uses the lives of gay people as a wedge issue was re-elected by a slim but heady margin; 11 statewide anti-gay measures were approved at the ballot box; and the Republican Party increased its majority by four seats in both the House and the Senate.

More difficult for progressives than the results, however, was the overall crushing disappointment. Even conservatives acknowledged that Dems and their allies had worked their hearts out to oust Bush, with volunteers...
