M2 PRESSWIRE-19 August 1999-QANTAS: Qantas operating profit exceeds AUD$600 million (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD RDATE:190899 Sydney -- Qantas today reported a profit before tax of AUD$662.5 million for the year ended 30 June 1999, an increase of 38.6 percent over the prior financial year.

Net profit after tax of AUD$420.9 million increased by 38 percent and included an abnormal after tax gain of AUD$38.9 million relating to sale of part of the investment in the international data network company EQUANT NV. Excluding the abnormal gain, operating profit before tax rose by 25.9 percent to AUD$601.7 million and operating profit after tax but before abnormal items increased by 25.2 percent to AUD$382 million.
