M2 PRESSWIRE-22 December 1999-UK GOVERNMENT: Cooper welcomes Court judgement on Report by Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (C)1994-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD RDATE:211299 Yvette Cooper, Public Health Minister, today welcomed the High Court's decision to dismiss the tobacco industry's judicial review of the Report of the Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (SCOTH).
The SCOTH report, published last year, reviewed scientific evidence on the effect of tobacco on health and focused on the environmental effects of tobacco smoke. It concluded that long-term exposure to environmental tobacco smoke is a cause of lung cancer.
