M2 PRESSWIRE-27 February 2001-ATA: Average airfares increase four percent in January (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD RDATE:26022001 Washington -- The Air Transport Association (ATA) Office of Economics reports that airline ticket prices increased in January. Average fares increased 4.1 percent; coach fares by 3.6 percent and first-class fares rose by 5.3 percent in January, compared to the same month a year ago.
"Last year the airline industry saw its costs rise -- especially labor and fuel," said ATA Chief Economist David A. Swierenga. "It is those continued rising costs that unavoidably increased ticket prices."
