Average fares increased 4.1 percent; coach fares by 3.6 percent and first-class fares rose by 5.3 percent in January, compared to the same month a year ago.

"Last year the airline industry saw its costs rise -- especially labor and fuel," said ATA Chief Economist David A. Swierenga. "It is those continued rising costs that unavoidably increased ticket prices."
