M2 PRESSWIRE-24 April 2001-ATA: Airfares dropped 2.5 percent in March (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD RDATE:23042001 Washington -- The Air Transport Association (ATA) Office of Economics reports that airline ticket prices fell in March. Average fares declined 2.5 percent; coach fares were down 2.5 percent and first-class fares decreased 1.0 percent in March, compared to the same month a year ago.
"A weak U.S. economy has softened the demand for air travel," said ATA Chief Economist David A. Swierenga. "Falling corporate earnings and a more cautious consumer outlook has resulted in downward pressure on airline ticket prices."
