Edelman, who served as ambassador to the Republic of Turkey from July 2003 to June 2005, was nominated to be the Pentagon's policy chief by President Bush on May 16, 2005.

The president signed the recess appointment today. Edelman was principal deputy assistant to the vice president for national security affairs from February 2001 to June 2003.
