M2 PRESSWIRE-12 August 2005-IBM: Bullets and gas on demand(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD RDATE:11082005 The U.S. Army has completed an experiment that would allow vehicles to automatically notify supply units when they need repair or run low on fuel or ammunition. The test by Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) combined remote sensors, IBM middleware, wireless communications and a global positioning system.
Currently troops in the vehicles must determine fuel and ammo levels then transmit their needs to headquarters or supply units. Doing so in combat can be dangerous. The on demand system automatically notifies supply and maintenance units of needs and reports the position of the vehicle that requires service. It also lets crews remotely...
