Third of Ford's Triton gas-engine trio is 6.8-liter V-10, eventually.(Auto Weekend)

DEARBORN, Mich. - Triton is more than just a cool name for Ford's new breed of truck engine. It was revealed during a recent press conference at Ford's Dearborn proving grounds that the "Tri" in Triton represents three members in the Triton gasoline engine family - the existing 4.6-liter V-8 and new 5.4-liter V-8 and 6.8-liter V-10 power plants.

An impressive list of products and engineering innovations was introduced, but it was the heavy-duty hardware - a new-generation F-250 pickup and Triton V-10 power plant - that grabbed my attention. V-10 power, which only had been available beneath the hood of Dodge's Ram pickup, is a reality at Ford. Unfortunately, it isn't quite time for those with big hauling demands to start placing orders for F-series...
