Roger Stone, a well-known Washington political operative, quit his volunteer job with the Dole presidential campaign yesterday amid a sex scandal spurred by two supermarket tabloids. The Star and the National Enquirer said Mr. Stone and his wife, Nydia, posted messages on an X-rated Internet site and placed ads in sleazy magazines seeking male and female sexual partners.

The tabloids even showed racy pictures of the consultant and his wife - he without a shirt but with a black bar superimposed over his eyes, and she in a revealing negligee - that appeared in swingers' magazines.
