The Perseid meteor shower, perennially one of the best sky shows, will light up the sky tonight, but those in the metropolitan area will be too blinded by the city's light pollution to see very much. Every year in late July and August the Earth passes through the orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet, and thousands of particles the comet has strewn through space fall through the Earth's atmosphere, producing the spectacle.
