RICHMOND - Republican James S. Gilmore III, reaching out to female voters in the Virginia governor's race, risked alienating pro-life conservatives Monday night by staking out an "anything goes" position on abortion in the first eight weeks of pregnancy. In a televised debate with Lt. Gov.
Donald S. Beyer Jr., the Democratic nominee for governor, Mr. Gilmore stressed for the first time that he supports abortion until the eighth week of pregnancy.
