It takes a village of women to defend President Clinton. That much is clear. Why do they do it? That's not so clear. Men are nearly always more critical of Mr. Clinton's behavior than women are. Some of the female defenses are tortured indeed. Toni Morrison, the novelist, for example. In the New Yorker she tries to focus on the scandal in terms of plot and character.
She's smart enough to dismiss any comparison between the president and Achilles. She knows as we do that the part of the president's anatomy that's vulnerable is not his heel. She finds raw and brutal comedy in the media commentators who lace the law with homilies as though they're Cotton Mather, but she must realize that Mr. Clinton opened himself up to such sermonizing with his...
