It takes a village of women to defend President Clinton. That much is clear. Why do they do it? That's not so clear. Men are nearly always more critical of Mr. Clinton's behavior than women are. Some of the female defenses are tortured indeed. Toni Morrison, the novelist, for example. In the New Yorker she tries to focus on the scandal in terms of plot and character.
