D.C. United was left with a void in goal when keeper Troy Perkins when he was transferred to a Norwegian team at the end of last season.
The MLS goalie of the year in 2006, Perkins was United's starting goalie for three of the last four seasons. Not since 2002 when goalie Nick Rimando joined the team has United started the season with a new group of goalies.
Trade acquisition Zach Wells, 27, and Peruvian goalie Jose Carvallo, 22, are competing for the job this season.
United received the 6-foot-2 Wells from the MLS champion Houston Dynamo for defender Bobby Boswell.
The 5-foot-11 Carvallo joins the team on loan from Universitario, a Peruvian team.
