Cash machine operator Bank Machine is trying to get 5 [pounds sterling] notes into wider circulation in a move championed by the Bank of England.

The company is unveiling what it claims is the UK's first 5 [pounds sterling] note-only ATM in East London next month and is targeting c-stores.

"Gettingfivers back into circulation will be of huge benefit to consumers and retailers.

"No one likes having to pay for a low-cost product with a 10 [pounds sterling] or even 20 [pounds sterling] note and no one wants too many heavy 1 coins [pounds sterling]," said Ron Delnevo, managing director of Bank Machine.

The Bank of England said it welcomed the initiative.
