Grocer, August 2, 2008
Ben and Jerry's has added a 'Caring Dairy' logo to cartons across its European ice cream and frozen yoghurt ranges.
The logo on the back of the carton, which is expected to debut in early September, is the latest ethical selling point for the brand following the launch of its first Fairtrade ice cream back in 2006.
"Caring dairy is a great programme, it's a great commitment; happy cows make happy milk--it's fairly simple," joint founder Jerry Greenfield told The Grocer.
The Unilever-owned brand introduced the Caring Dairy concept, which promotes sustainable dairy farming across 11 Dutch dairy farms, as a pilot initiative back in 2003. Under the scheme, farms are benchmarked against 11 sustainability indicators such as animal welfare, biodiversity and climate impact.
