Scots get free advice on green measures

Grocer,  Sept 13, 2008

The Scottish Food and Drink Federation has secured an agreement with Scotland's main government business support programmes to provide Scottish food and drink manufacturers with free environmental advice.

The package advises businesses how to reduce waste raw materials, save on energy bills and emissions, and improve manufacturing and processing efficiencies.

Also included is advice on how to slash packaging, logistics and transport costs, cut water, motivate staff and divert waste into raw materials.

Manufacturers will be able to receive the advice by phone or email from the Carbon Trust, Envirowise, Wrap, the Energy Savings Trust, Scottish Enterprise, the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme and the Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

A company could save between 200 [pounds sterling] and 1,000 [pounds sterling] per employee per year by implementing efficiency measures, said Robbie Weir, programme manager of Envirowise Scotland.

"Improved environmental performance can help businesses to comply with environmental legislation, improve supply chain integrity and increase profits," he added.
