SAIC also announced it had received an $8.3 million contract from DARPA (that's the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to develop prototype equipment in the Robust Passive Sonar program. Here a submarine with sensitive listening devices tracks other subs and ships.
"We are planning to take up to 10 teraflops of computing power in a Linux cluster computer with embedded field programmable gate arrays to sea in the late summer of 2004," said program manager Peter Mikhalevsky in a prepared statement. The project involves a number of other contractors, including the Marine Physical Laboratory at UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
