Hurricane Katrina donations and fund raising

The California Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee sent 22 registered nurse volunteers from California, Arizona and Ohio to the disaster area on Sept. 6.

Foley & Lardner LLP will match dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 any contributions made by the firm's personnel to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

FTS Auto will donate 100 percent of all sales from its Car Care Club coupon book in September to the American Red Cross.

Clear Channel Communications' 11 local radio stations put together a fund-raiser in Qualcomm Stadium parking lot from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 7.

Vavi Sport & Social Club hosted a fund-raiser consisting of raffle prizes donated by local businesses, drinks and food specials and live music at La Jolla Brew House from 6 p.m. to close on Sept. 8. The money donated from the event will be given to the Red Cross.

By Sept. 6, donations from various food corporations to America's Second Harvest have enabled the nation's food bank network to secure more than 200 truckloads of food and water, which equal 6.3 million pounds of product, or 4.92 million meals for delivery to the disaster areas. America's Second Harvest has also raised more than $4.1 million from individuals across the country.

Ikea San Diego will donate the entire purchase price of each Famnig red heart toy sold to the Red Cross. Ikea will also match dollar-for-dollar any employee's donation up to $250,000, and independent co-owners Rene Hausler and Johnny Andersen will donate an additional $10,000 to the Red Cross.

The San Diego Municipal Employees Association left San Diego on Sept. 2 to drive nonstop to the Houston Astrodome to drop off several thousand dollars' worth of food and water donated by the city of San Diego Water Department.
