State agency hands out emergency shelter funds

San Diego Business Journal, Sept 15, 2008 by Michelle Mowad

Seeking An End To Homelessness: Local programs for the homeless and domestic violence victims were awarded $600,000 in Federal Emergency Shelter Grant funds by the state Department of Housing and Community Development.

The HCD announced the grants totaling $6.4 million in 24 counties on Sept. 8.

HCD Director Lynn L. Jacobs said these awards serve as a step toward ending chronic homelessness statewide.

Three local programs were awarded close to $200,000 each: North County Interfaith Council, North County Serenity House and North County Solutions for Change.

The service providers will use the funds for operating costs and essential services, including food, transportation and counseling provided to clients.
