Arkansas Business, March 17, 2008 by Mark Hengel

If you're seeking a new job, the Arkansas Educational Television Network might be the place to look.

Arkansas' public television station walked away with two prizes from the American Psychological Association's 2008 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards, winning the government/military/educational institution category.

"We do everything by team," said Donna Smith, finance and administration director at AETN. The network structures most of its operations by forming teams, she said, adding, "We even party by team."

Outtakes spoke with her Thursday morning, and Smith said she was looking forward to a "pie and punch" event planned for later that day.

"[Activities like parties] give us a chance to see each other and network," she said. "We get to see the big picture, and employees feel like they are a part of the process."

It's also worth noting that only five North American employers won workplace awards this year, and AETN was also recognized as a Best Practices Honoree. The average AETN employee has worked at the station for 10 years and has undoubtedly watched more Ken Burns documentaries than any person should ever have to.

Smith said she and Allen Weatherly, AETN's executive director, now hope to use the awards as recruitment tools.
